Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 200 to 900 CE. This is a white jadeite maskette, drilled all the way through in antiquity for suspension. The jadeite itself is a creamy white with almost blue-grey undertones and a few small, black flecks. The carved, slightly abstract face can be viewed differently from different angles, which is a regular feature of jade pendants and maskettes in the Maya world. The durability and beauty of jadeite made it a prestige item, and a maskette like this one would have been owned by a wealthier member of society - and it probably ended its like decorating their grave! Size: 2.2" W x 1.9" H (5.6 cm x 4.8 cm)
