Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. This is only the second time we handled a Mezcala anthropomorphic axe god figure with painted features! An abstract standing anthropomorphic figure with string-cut features including delineated feet, legs, hands, arms, nose, mouth, and cap. Remarkably, the eyes were highlighted using a pigment with a base of iron and sulfur. Quite an unusual example from the ancients of Guerrero, Mexico. Size: 1.125" W x 5.5" H (2.9 cm x 14 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: Private New York, USA collection, from 1966, acquired in 1989
