Description:

Greece, Corinth, ca. 500 to 400 BCE. The smallest Greek miniature we have ever seen! This exquisite pottery kyathos, a ladle-like cup with a single handle, is a true rarity. Despite its minuscule size, it is beautifully decorated with a grapevine motif in black and white encircling the exterior, while the interior is coated with a red slip. The vessel features a rounded loop handle and a very short base. Over the years, we have handled hundreds of Greek miniatures - some quite small, others approaching the dimensions of full-sized vessels. However, this example is exceptionally diminutive, measuring only 1 inch wide (including the handle) by 0.25 inches tall (2.5 cm x 0.6 cm) - approximately 1/12th the scale of a standard Corinthian kyathos! Finding such a tiny vessel with intricate decoration is extraordinarily rare. While it may have served as a child’s toy, it could also have been a temple or tomb offering, adding to its mystery and significance. Size: 1" W x .25" H (2.5 cm x 0.6 cm) Size: 1" W x 0.25" H (2.5 cm x 0.6 cm)
