Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Mimbres / Mogollon, ca. 950 to 1150 CE. A rare ceramic bowl featuring a painted interior design of two grasshoppers or crickets within a geometric banded border, rendered in dark pigment that has weathered to a warm brown hue on a creamy ground. The insects are shown in profile with stylized bodies, segmented legs, and linear antennae, forming a balanced composition that reflects the Mimbres tradition of natural imagery and graphic storytelling. A circular kill hole pierces the center of the vessel, a ritual feature often associated with funerary use and the ceremonial "release" of the spirit. The hemispherical exterior is unadorned. Size: 8.25" W x 4" H (21 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired prior to 2002
