Description:

Native American, North America, Hohokam, Sacaton Red-on-Buff Phase, ca. 900-1100 CE. This miniature bowl stems from the Sacaton Red-on-Buff phase of the Hohokam Sedentary period. Usually designs are geometric and feature interlocking scrolls framed within rectangular panels. This example, however, is extremely rare in that it features a figurative element with five hunched over basket carriers transporting heavy loads as they amble around the surface, each figure leaning on a Paho (cane). Pahos or prayer sticks were religious implements used by the Hohokam. This suggests that this small bowl served a ritualistic purpose. 5-1/2"H x 6-1/4"W at widest point
