Description:

Ancient Mediterranean, Island of Crete, Minoan Civilization, ca. 1500 BCE. A petite terracotta vessel, in hues of burgundy and coral, with a flat stable base, curved side walls with a single applied handle, a thin rim, and a deep body cavity. The body is beautifully adorned with a repeating cream-hued zig-zag geometric pattern enclosed by one solid band above and two solid bands below. The rise of an urban society, centered on the palace at Knossos and other, smaller cities, required the Minoans to manufacture a wide range of utilitarian items like this one. During the first half of the 2nd millennium BCE, Minoan Crete was prosperous and actively traded with other cultures around the Mediterranean. Wine and oil were among the most highly-coveted substances in the ancient world, and would have been measured or consumed in vessels like this. A wonderful and vibrant example! Size: 4.75" L x 3.5" W x 2" H (12.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 5.1 cm).
