Description:

Native American, Southeastern United States, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A boldly textured Mississippian pottery jar distinguished by its dense field of punctate decoration. The vessel presents a rounded body tapering gently toward a flat base, with a thickened rim encircled by diagonal impressions that frame the upper register. The exterior surface is covered in closely spaced tool-made punctations, creating a tactile pattern that animates the clay with shadow and rhythm. This all-over texturing not only provided visual interest but also may have improved grip in daily use. The earthen surface has matured to deep brown tones with areas of darker fire clouding, evidence of traditional open firing methods. Such punctate jars were integral to domestic and ceremonial life in Mississippian communities, used for storage, cooking, or serving. The vessel stands as a compelling example of Southeastern ceramic traditions, where form, surface, and function were unified in a distinctly regional aesthetic. Size: 4.3" Diameter x 4" H (10.9 cm x 10.2 cm)
