Description:

East Asia, China, Zhou Dynasty, ca. 1046 to 256 BCE. An exceedingly rare standing tiger statue, expertly carved from serpentine, featuring a tenon peg at its base - indicating its architectural role in a significant structure, such as a palace, ancestral hall, or temple. This tenon would have anchored the sculpture as a protective presence or symbol of elite status. The tiger - an apex predator and revered guardian in Zhou culture - is rendered in a bold, upright, stylized stance, evoking authority and vigilance. A serpentine tiger of this form, scale, and architectural context represents a profoundly significant artifact of early Chinese ritual and decorative art. Size: 9" W x 21.5" H (22.9 cm x 54.6 cm); 24" H (61 cm) on included custom stand.
