Description:

Native American, Northeastern United States, New York, Penn Yan, Seneca / Haudenosaunee Iroquois, ca. 1400 CE. An exceedingly rare figural carving made from bone or moose antler depicting a standing anthropomorphic figure with bifurcated headdress, the face rendered with simplified features and recessed eyes. The figure is shown in a ritualized pose with one hand placed across the chest and the other positioned over the abdomen or genitals, a gesture associated with fertility, protection, or spiritual power in Northeastern Woodland imagery. This is an exceptionally rare example of Northeastern Woodlands figural antler carving, with very few comparable Seneca Haudenosaunee effigy figures known in private or institutional collections. Size: 6.5" L x 1" W (16.5 cm x 2.5 cm); Riker case: 12.5" L x 8" W (31.8 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-New York, USA collection, assembled 1960s to 2010s
