Lot 544
Near East, Levant / Mesopotamia region, Neo Assyrian Empire, Iron Age II, 9th to 8th century BCE. Carved from dark steatite, this sculptural libation or censer bowl is formed as a lion grasping the rim of a shallow basin, with its head projecting forward over the edge. The lion's open mouth is pierced with a drilled channel that leads to a short cylindrical spout, suggesting it was intended to direct liquid into or out of the vessel during ritual use. Discernable facial features and large eyes are paired with a mane rendered in layered, geometric carving, giving the piece strong presence from every angle. A rare and striking object that combines symbolic animal imagery with functional design, reflecting the luxury arts of Neo-Assyrian culture. Size: 4.25" L x 3" W x 1.5" H (10.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
Provenance: prominent private St. Louis, Missouri, USA collection; since 1990's, ex-prominent private Florida, USA collection.
