Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. Cocle sculpture and pottery usually consists of an unslipped or buff slipped surface that is decorated with contrasting polychrome abstract motifs which often include animal themes. This piece is actually a zoomorphic or possibly anthropomorphic effigy vessel - its form consisting of a rounded lower section resembling an inverted mushroom cap, a tall cylindrical neck, and a flared rim - its surface modeled and painted to present a lively figure with wide open, concentric circle eyes, a protruding pointy nose, a browline that extends dramatically to detail the nose and ears, and a toothy grin detailed with a black tattoos or body paint. Its body is presented below in a stylized manner. The single strap handle joining rim to shoulder features a mesmerizing visual language of stylized, sinuous, interlacing spirals, perhaps with zoomorphic inhabitants. Size: 8.125" W (handle to opposite end) x 11.25" H (20.6 cm x 28.6 cm)

Cocle ceramics include some of the most intriguing expressions of visual culture in Pre-Hispanic Central America. Archaeological excavations in the Cocle Province of Central Panama have demonstrated that the Cocle culture emerged in approximately 500 CE and lasted until about 1000 CE. Despite the fact that they were contemporaneous with the Diquis culture to the north, their visual culture suggests that the Cocle were a distinct, independent civilization.
