Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Late Paracas, ca. 100 BCE. his atlatl departs from the characteristic Peruvian style, a shortish rod with an attached hook, and a hook-like decorative projection at the handle. Instead this piece features an expressive mask with running tears attached to the base of the shaft with original fiber. Atlatls were used in warfare, hunting, and ritual. As in many cultures, warfare helped to define the elite members of society, sustain and symbolize their power and prestige. Size: 19" H (48.3 cm); 21" H (53.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private H.J. Westermann collection, Germany
