Description:

Central Asia, Persia (Iran), Parthian Empire, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A stunning electrum (gold & silver alloy) ornament, likely once part of a diadem worn by an elite individual. Thin sheets of electrum were molded into the form of a gazelle head, with the verso flattened to rest flush against a headband. A pierced hole runs laterally through the sides beneath the horns for attachment. The elongated horns - characteristic of gazelles or possibly ibexes (though rendered straight rather than curved) - extend dramatically upward. Delicate wires are attached to the horn tips, strung with petite glass beads and flat, leaf-shaped panels decorated with stippling, likely designed to flutter and catch the light when worn. The eyes are inlaid with modern turquoise-colored beads, although they likely once held semiprecious stones or glass. An extremely rare and beautiful example of elite Parthian craftsmanship. Size: 1.25" L x 0.75" W x 2.25" H (3.2 cm x 1.9 cm x 5.7 cm); gold quality: 51% to 72% (equivalent to 12K+ to 17K+); silver quality: 24% to 36%; weight: 8.6 grams
