Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast leaded bronze double-looped caduceus with a slender, twisted shaft. The upper section is composed of two intersecting circles, evoking the twin serpents associated with Hermes' staff, while wing-like projection adorns the junction, suggesting divine speed and protection. The surface retains an aged patina, adding depth and character that speaks to centuries of history. The caduceus originates in ancient Greece, associated with Hermes, the messenger god, who carried it as a symbol of commerce, negotiation, and protection during travel. Over time, it became widely recognized as an emblem of balance and reciprocity, with its twin serpents representing harmony between opposing forces. Although often mistakenly used as a medical symbol, its true historical roots lie in trade, eloquence, and the safe conduct of those under its bearer's charge. Size: 3" L x 0.8" W x 3.75" H (7.6 cm x 2 cm x 9.5 cm)
