Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. A beautifully-detailed, rare portrayal of the Egyptian god Bes rising from an eight-petaled flower. This item formed a handle and lid for a small jar. Bes is molded with fine detail, including finely rendered hands and armor; his face and ears are naturalistic. He has a beard which is often interpreted as a lion's mane. Bes watched over the household, particularly the women and children of the house, protecting them with the magical sign sa. Perhaps this was a lid on a medicine jar or other household item, made for protection. Size: 2.4" W x 2.4" H (6.1 cm x 6.1 cm); 3.9" H (9.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Carlton Collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
