Japan, Edo Period., ca. 1866 - 1899 CE. Katana signed Sukesada, with original WWII surrender documentation. A katana of traditional manufacture signed Sukesada on the nakago (tang), the Sukesada lineage representing one of the most prolific and respected sword-making traditions of Bizen Province, active across multiple generations from the Muromachi through Edo periods. This example dates to the late Edo period, ca. late 19th century. The blade is of classic shinogi-zukuri form — the standard double-ridged geometry of the Japanese long sword — with a cutting edge of 26 inches and a width of 1³⁄₁₆ inches, 6mm thickness at the notch. The hamon (temper line) is a lively gunome pattern — a repeating wavelike temper characteristic of the Bizen tradition — with deep nioi at the point (boshi), indicating a skilled and confident smith. The forging grain is ko-mokume-hada, a tight, fine wood-grain pattern that reflects careful and accomplished steel working. The blade is presented in complete koshirae (mountings): a black lacquer saya (scabbard) and tsuka (handle) wrapped in green-black ito over same (rayskin) in traditional diagonal binding. The tsuba is of mokkogata (four-lobed) form in iron with brass inlay and attractive age patina. Overall length in mountings: 37 inches. An origami (formal attribution document) is attached to the saya, providing period authentication. Accompanying the sword is an original Allied forces WWII surrender tag, documenting the blade's capture and processing during the Pacific Theater — placing this sword within one of the most historically significant and actively collected categories of Japanese militaria. Blade: 26" cutting edge | 1³⁄₁₆" width | 6mm thickness at notch Overall in mountings: 37"
