Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Guerrero region, Sultepec, Pre-Classic period, ca. 600 BCE to 100 CE. A stone mask from Guerrero, Mexico, a region best known for Mezcala and Chontal sculpture made from a creamy alabaster stone - when backlight the face glows! This fascinating example boasts features particular to the Sultepec, such as a prominent nose and open lips with triangular teeth. The recessed eye sockets are drilled and perhaps held contrasting stone inlays at one point. Scholars believe that such masks were tied to funerary bundles of the noble elite.
