Description:

Pre-Columbian, Dominican Republic, Taino peoples, ca. 1100 to 1250 CE. A beautiful ball used in the ancient Pre-Columbian ball game. The ball exhibits a spherical form and is hand-carved from a pale yellow-white sandstone. Its surface presents eight panels of meticulously hand-pecked abstract curvilinear and geometric motifs curving in-between two concentric circles at either pole. Traditionally, the players of the Mesoamerican ball game used a rubber ball while on the court. Though the exact nature of this ball is unknown, it likely had a votive or ceremonial use as a trophy or an offering to the gods from the winners. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 3.5" in Diameter (8.9 cm).
