Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A chased brass panel repousse decorated with the fierce tantric deity known as Simhamukha in a frightening form: her face is a Snow Lion with a fanged mouth, wild eyes, flaming hair decorated with skulls, a ritual trident / staff with skulls, a skull cap bowl filled with blood in one hand, and trampling a prone figure. The square at the center is etched with 14 x 14 boxes with etched symbols- possibly a yantra diagram to serve as a protection talisman. In Tibetan Buddhism, Simhamukha is a wrathful deity associated with wisdom and learning and invoked in certain tantric practices and rituals aimed at dispelling obstacles, negative energies, and spiritual hindrances. "Simhamukha" is Sanskrit comes from "Simha" meaning lion, and "Mukha" means face since she has a Snow Lion visage, the Snow Lion is mythical and auspicious creature of compassion and wisdom.
