Description:

MID CRETACEOUS PERIOD:   112 - 99.6 million years ago.  Central coast, Morocco - This giant white ammonite is of a type that is much more scarce than typical solid coil ammonites.  This type here is called a heteromorph and it features an open coil with space in between each whorl to the center.  The exact species is not determined but these circular varieties are even more rare than the J-shaped open coil specimens found in the same region.  Professionally prepared so that the chamber detail you see (on both sides!) is fully exposed and natural.  There is  no fabrication but repair and crack filling is inevitable due to the damage these rare fossils sustain in extraction.  This ammonite has been repaired from several pieces with color restored.  Like other ordinary ammonites found in the deposit, white examples are found as well as brown and golden brown examples.  From the coastal Cretaceous deposits of Agadir, Morocco, heteromorph ammonites of this circular, open-coil nature are only very rarely found in this size class.  19" across. Ex-private East Coast, USA collection. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
