Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A stunning finial of a lord and attendants made from high quality 78.45% to 79.68% (equivalent to 18K+ to 19K+) gold sheets, painstakingly cut and molded to form an intricate processional boat scene. The figures stand upon a rectangular ground - their feet set into the surface via tabs and backs supported by additional tabs with dangling applique ornaments. Each wears an elaborate headdress and carries rod shaped weapons or paddles; while clearly all are people of elite status, the central lord is the largest with a pectoral ornament. This incredible and exceedingly rare depiction is similar in style to the famous raft figures made by the Muisca culture on display in the Gold Museum, Bogota, Colombia. Size: 4.5" L x 2" W x 3.5" H (11.4 cm x 5.1 cm x 8.9 cm); case: 7.5" L x 5" W x 8.25" H (19 cm x 12.7 cm x 21 cm); gold quality: 78.45% to 79.68% (equivalent to 18K+ to 19K+); weight: 65.7 grams

This scene whether a procession on a boat or land- likely represents a transition into the afterlife - the leader surrounded by his most trusted advisors. The Moche believed that death was a journey, and funerary rituals often involved human sacrifice - officials and warriors would accompany their lord in both life and death.
