Description:

Reginald Grenville Eves (British, 1876-1941). Portrait of a man. Charcoal drawing on paper, 1917. Signed and dated at lower right. Crafted in charcoal by the esteemed British portrait artist Reginald Grenville Eves in 1917, this striking drawing offers a glimpse into his talent for capturing character with seemingly effortless strokes. The sitter, adorned with a somewhat rakish flat cap, is rendered with a keen eye for detail, his face bearing the marks of experience and contemplation that Eves was known for discerning. The artist's mastery of light and shadow brings a palpable presence to the subject, inviting speculation about his identity and the era in which he lived, a testament to Eves' ability to transcend mere likeness and evoke a sense of inner life through his art. This piece stands as a compelling example of Eves' skill in portraiture, a genre in which he achieved considerable acclaim during his career. Size of drawing: 16" W x 22" H (40.6 cm x 55.9 cm); of frame: 24.75" W x 30.75" H (62.9 cm x 78.1 cm)

About the artist: "Eves was born in London in 1876. He won the Trevelyan Goodall scholarship in art and entered the Slade School of Fine Art. In 1901 he exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time, and after 1912 he exhibited at least 2 works every year until his death in 1941 (with the exception of 1931). He painted the portraits of many distinguished figures including George VI, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Thomas Hardy, the Queen of Spain and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Many of his works hang in the National Portrait Gallery. Eves was appointed Royal Academician in 1939 and became a war artist in 1940. He died in 1941."
