Reinhard Gorner (German, b. 1950). "Hercules Defeats the Hind" New Museum, Berlin, Germany, 2009. Fine Art Lightjet-Print, edition 1 of 5. A limited edition (the first of only five) large-scale photographic work by architectural photographer Reinhard Gorner. This composition depicts the Neue Museum in Berlin designed by Friedrich August Stuler by order of King Frederick William IV of Prussia from 1843 to 1855. Gorner took this photo after its restoration by David Chipperfield as the building incurred damage during WWII and significant age wear. Gorner beautifully captured the Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival details, note the coffered dome as well as the arcuation below, in addition to the dramatic murals adorning its lunettes, most notably, Hercules dominating the hind. A very special piece, ideal for anyone who appreciates architectural history as well as classical mythology, mounted in a custom frame. Size: 75" L x 50" W (190.5 cm x 127 cm)
Artist Statement: "The pictures we choose to live with and the rooms we live in show us aspects of our own self. They open horizons and widen our inner spectrum. By means of photography I seek to convey the impact architecture has on our awareness of life. The depicted architecture opens spaces, tells stories and refers to a time when one’s sense of esthetics and the sense of space were identical. With my pictures I want to inspire you and appeal to inner spheres of beauty and tranquility. You are invited to enter a realm of calmness, width and equilibrium, be it in private rooms or at workplaces, and to experience this as a source of creativity and recreation."
