Description:

Northwestern Europe, England, London, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A cylindrical storage container shaped as a giant spool made by the J & P Coats company upon an integral wooden stand with 4 pull out drawers with decorative carvings and brass knobs. The cabinet once stored and advertised cotton threads in shops, and the surface of the "thread" around the spool is made from corrugated wood paneling molded over the barrel shaped body. The back of the cabinet has a "J&P COATS BEST SIX CORD" decal. Size: 22" L x 17" Diameter x 18.5" H (55.9 cm x 43.2 cm x 47 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Fair condition. Fissures and crack to verso panel and loss to decal label. Stable pressure fissures inside drawers. Abrasions and losses to "thread" surface on exterior and areas of repair and slightly loose pieces. Fading of painted words. Drawers slid easily in and out and are in generally good condition. This could certainly be used as intended.
