Western Europe, Germany, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A two pairs of miniature binoculars / opera glasses, showcasing fine craftsmanship. One set is by the German maker G. Rodenstock, Munich, crafted from Bakelite with the model name "Aldon" inscribed on the underside of the bridge. The second pair features brass construction with elegant mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay. Both opera glasses include binocular-style lenses and a focus wheel for adjustable magnification. A faint circular maker's mark can be observed near the brass bridge adjacent to the right eyepiece of the nacre pair. Size of nacre pair: 4" L x 3.25" W x 1.5" Diameter (10.2 cm x 8.3 cm x 3.8 cm)

  • Condition: The nacre pair are missing the glass lens in the left side. The right side lens is scratched and cloudy, not very functional. Patina to brass, and indiscernible maker mark in a circle. Nacre is intact, and these make for a nice display piece. The leather storage case has heavy wear. The silk lining is fraying and has holes. The Rodenstock pair are slightly cloudy, but functional and adjustable. Zipper on case is tearing away from the leather and stitches are fraying.
