Rodolfo Morales (Mexican, 1925-2001). Mixed Media Collage, 1993. Hand signed by the artist at the lower right. A wonderful mixed media collage by Rodolfo Morales that features his signature dreamlike imagery. In this piece, Morales presents two abstract human visages in profile - each face composed of layers of cut fabric appliques, embroidery thread, ric rack, and colored foil - flanking a stylized blooming cactus composed of cut ribbons adorned by lace flowers and unexpected bright green stickers featuring numbers and letters - all against a decorative background of subtle creamy beige tones that contrast with the colorful thematic motifs, and surrounded by a blue lace border. A special collage - perhaps the most distinctive artform of Morales' oeuvre - that demonstrates the artist's unique visual language, one that bridges the worlds of folklore and fantasy. Size (artwork): 19.25" L x 13" W (48.9 cm x 33 cm) Size (frame): 23.325" L x 17.25" W (59.2 cm x 43.8 cm)
About the Artist: Born in a small town outside of Oaxaca City in Ocotlan de Morelos, Rodolfo Morales trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Mexico City and rose to recognition for his paintings and mixed media collages in the 1970s and 1980s. While Morales achieved international renown, he maintained a close connection to his hometown. Committed to cultural preservation, Morales founded the Rodolfo Morales Cultural Foundation in the late 1980s to support the restoration of historic architecture and public spaces in Ocotlan and nearby communities. Morales' art has been exhibited in both Europe and the United States, and a retrospective of his work titled "Rodolfo Morales: Juegos y Evocaciones" opened at the Mexican Museum in San Francisco, CA in 1996 and toured the United States as well as Canada. Morales also continued the legacy of the Mexican Muralist Movement, creating several murals to grace public buildings in Oaxaca and Mexico City during his lifetime.
