Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A stunning 18K+ gold (82%) crescentic pendant set with two oval garnet cabochons flanking a central square colorless glass inlay - colorless glass being the most coveted during the classical period - and three stunning wine red garnet danglers hanging below. The goldwork is so skillfully executed, with granulated borders surrounding the garnet and glass inlays as well as lining the gold crescent form. In addition, an integral gold loop makes this pendant not only beautiful but perfectly wearable as well! Size of pendant: 0.9" W (2.3 cm); length of cord: 17" L (43.2 cm); gold is 82% pure, equivalent to 18K+; total weight of pendant is 3.7 grams

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s

  • Condition: Very slight bending to form, mainly on one arm. The glass inlay has a slightly abraded surface; the garnets are in very fine condition with a few minute scratches. The pendant is ancient, with a modern cord to make it wearable.
