Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A mold-made terracotta oil lamp with an amazing iridescent patina that gives its red glaze an almost purple sheen. The concave interior discus has a scallop impression, ringed by molded, teardrop-shaped motifs. The lamp has a ring-shaped handle, a projecting, rounded spout, and a raised disc base on the bottom. Size: 4.5" L x 2.95" W x 1.75" H (11.4 cm x 7.5 cm x 4.4 cm)

Oil lamps such as this one would have been filled with olive oil, had a wick placed inside of them, and used to light homes, shops, holy places, and many other places throughout the Roman world. This lamp reminds us of the everyday lives of the people who would have used them.
