Lot 35
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A luminous relic of classical refinement, this Roman ring is crafted from high-karat gold and set with a radiant citrine intaglio carved in fine detail. The intaglio depicts the bust of a youthful male in left-facing profile, adorned with a laurel wreath and draped in a toga - emblems of civic virtue and military achievement. His features are idealized and serene, framed by neatly incised hair rendered in crisp lines that catch the light against the stone's golden body. Size of intaglio: 0.8" L x 0.6" W (2 cm x 1.5 cm); of ring: 1.1" L x 1" W (2.8 cm x 2.5 cm); US ring size: 6.5; gold quality: 87.6% (21 karats); weight: 5.9 grams
Rings such as this served not only as personal adornments but also as status symbols and seals of identity. The choice of citrine - a gem associated in antiquity with clarity of thought and solar power - heightens the aura of intellectual and divine favor. The plain, tapering band draws the eye to the intaglio's sunlit translucence, enhancing its function as both a practical seal and a miniature portrait of Roman gravitas.
