Description:

Roman, Imperial Era, Holy Land, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A substantial bronze batillum, a ritual implement used for tending fire or incense on altars during religious ceremonies. This example features a rectangular, slightly concave shovel like pan with raised edges, flanked by petal like finials at the rear corners. The handle rises from the flared, petal-like neck - resembling the capital of a Corinthian column. Such implements were essential components of Roman domestic and temple ritual life, employed in sacrifices, libations, and purification rites. Size: 10" L x 3.5" W (25.4 cm x 8.9 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Repaired with visible yellow adhesive residue on the handle surface. This can probably be sanded down to be less prominent. Heavy green patina and mineral deposits. Comes with custom display stand.
