Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A remarkable and exceptionally rare bronze sculpture depicting Hercules (Greek Herakles) in the midst of one of his Twelve Labors - capturing the elusive Ceryneian Hind. Rendered in stunning detail, the hero is shown grasping the antlers of the massive female deer, an impressive creature said to be larger than a bull. This labor, imposed by King Eurystheus and ordained by the Oracle of Delphi, was part of Hercules' penance for past transgressions, a reflection of his mythological journey of redemption. The scene captures the tension and power of Hercules as he subdues the hind, a feat of both strength and skill. Such finely detailed depictions of Hercules' labors are rare in Roman bronze, making this piece a significant testament to the artistic and mythological heritage of the ancient world. Size: 2.25" W x 3" H (5.7 cm x 7.6 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Item tested using XRF technology. Results show Heracles and beast are ancient bronze.
