Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A modest yet evocative Roman bronze signet ring, its rectangular bezel inscribed with three compact lines of Greek script. Though the lettering remains partially indecipherable, its compact, blocky form suggests it may have once recorded a name, a blessing, or a private motto - now lost to time and oxidation. The inscription is deeply incised within a bordered panel, which was likely pressed into clay or wax to mark ownership or affirm identity. The ring's sturdy, thickened shoulders taper gently into a rounded band, its surface smoothed by age and wear. The dark patina and soft earthen encrustation speak to centuries of burial and survival. Greek was commonly used in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire, even by Roman citizens, and rings of this type may have belonged to traders, administrators, or literate artisans. Their worn inscriptions often reflect the quiet, everyday communications of the Roman world - personal rather than monumental. Size: 0.9" L x 0.8" W (2.3 cm x 2 cm); US ring size: 6.75

Though its message has faded, the ring endures as a symbol of continuity: a once-functional object now rendered poetic by its silence.
