Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd centuries CE. This is a cast bronze handle from a vessel; it is a high, arched strap with a thumb rest and end terminating in a cast theatre mask. The mask is wearing a large headdress and has incised sidelocks; overall the piece has a fine olive green patina. Masks were hugely important to Roman drama, covering the entire face and portraying exaggerated facial expressions so that people in the back of the audience could understand how a character was feeling. A handle like this probably belonged to a fan of theatre! Custom stand. Size: 5.25" H (13.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- New York Gallery, since 1992 in a German collection.
