Description:

Rome, Imperial, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful gathering of 4 incised intaglios, 1 of glass and 3 of carnelian, all of ovoid form and boasting hues of coral, scarlet, pink, and peach. Made from glass, the first and largest intaglio presents the image of a classical pouring vessel with a flat foot, bulbous body, slender neck, flared rim, and a pair of strap handles. The remaining 3 intaglios are made from carnelian. One of these intaglios displays the image of the Mercury (Greek Hermes) holding a caduceus, while another features a depiction of Ceres (Greek Demeter) bearing a cornucopia. The last of the intaglios is the only one with a hemispherical face and exhibits the form of a standing bird. Size of largest: 0.5" L x 0.375" W (1.3 cm x 1 cm)
