Roman, Republic Period, ca. 1st century BCE; Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A gorgeous carnelian intaglio incised with a left-facing satyr in a seated position. The intriguing creature presents nude with hooved feet and hairy legs, the head raised with gaze slightly downwards, while holding a double-flute known as an aulos. The intaglio is set within the bezel of a beautiful 78.6% gold ring setting with a bifurcated shank and knot-form terminals. Size (intaglio): 0.43" Diameter x 0.18" H (1.1 cm x 0.5 cm); (ring setting): 0.55" L x 0.80" W x 0.91" H (1.4 cm x 2 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 78.6% (equivalent to 18K+); weight: 4.3 grams; US ring size: 7.25
