Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare and finely crafted Roman copper repousse applique depicting the goddess Minerva in profile, her visage serene yet resolute beneath a crested Corinthian helmet. Once affixed to a larger ceremonial or decorative object - perhaps a piece of armor, furniture, or a votive shield - this fragment embodies the refined skill and symbolic power of Roman metalwork. Minerva, the Roman counterpart of the Greek Athena, was revered as the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and the arts. Here she is rendered in classical form, her helmet pushed back to reveal delicate facial contours and a strong, introspective gaze. The repousse technique, achieved by hammering the design from the reverse side, creates a subtle relief that catches light across the contours of the face and crest. The surface bears an aged green patina, a testament to its ancient burial and centuries of oxidation, which enhances its sculptural depth and quiet dignity. Size: 2.9" W x 3" H (7.4 cm x 7.6 cm); 3" H (7.6 cm) on included custom stand.

The applique retains striking detail - visible traces of the helmet's plume and the armor-like folds of her drapery remain clear evidence of its original craftsmanship. This relic speaks to Minerva's enduring duality - protector and strategist, patroness of intellect and invention - capturing both the might and refinement of Roman civilization.
