After the death of Nero in 68 CE, the last of the Julio-Claudians was gone, and the Roman Empire faced a power vacuum. Galba, a governor of one of the Spanish provinces, was advancing on Rome, and news that the Senate and Praetorian Guard supported him caused Nero to take his own life. However, Galba squandered his advantage, moving slowly to reach the capital and offending his supporters. Roman political intrigue moved fast, and within a year, everyone from the legions to Nero's ex-brother-in-law had turned on him. In 69 CE, the Praetorian Guard assassinated Galba in the Forum.
