Lot 37B
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A rare Roman glass double unguentarium, exquisitely formed with twin tubular compartments joined along their vertical axis, surmounted by a shared flared rim and a single arched handle. This elegant vessel would have held precious oils, perfumes, or cosmetics, its dual chambers allowing for the storage of two separate unguents in one container. The translucent glass now exhibits a luminous sea-green hue with earthen encrustation and areas of shimmering iridescence, the result of long burial and mineral interaction. Subtle applied trailing accentuates the body, adding both texture and refinement. Size: 1" L x 3" W x 5.9" H (2.5 cm x 7.6 cm x 15 cm); 7.2" H (18.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Unguentaria such as this were treasured personal items in the Roman world, often buried with the deceased as funerary offerings to accompany them in the afterlife. The present example, with its sophisticated double form, reflects not only the technical mastery of Roman glassworkers but also the cultural importance placed on luxury and grooming.
