Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A delicate Roman glass pitcher, free-blown in translucent aqua-green glass, its surface shimmering with ancient iridescence. The vessel rests on a rounded base that swells into a globular body, tapering into a tall cylindrical neck accentuated by a constricted collar ring. The rim flares widely into a funnel mouth, with a double-folded edge lending strength and elegance. A single applied handle, drawn from the shoulder to the lip, is pinched at the top into a thumb rest, giving the vessel both utility and refined balance. Such pitchers were prized in Roman households for serving wine, oils, or perfumed water, their delicate translucency considered a mark of luxury. The survival of this example, complete with its applied handle and traces of shimmering silver, violet, and blue weathering, speaks to the enduring beauty of Roman glass. Size: 2.4" L x 2" W x 3.5" H (6.1 cm x 5.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
