Egypt, Roman, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely frog pendant comprised of a carnelian stone, the amphibian carved as an abstract, symmetrical, crest-like form with curved and angular features and an incised inverted "V" on the front face, which is convex, while the verso is flat. This carnelian carving is set in a bezel comprised of 89.8% gold (equivalent to over 20 karat) with an integral loop. In the Classical World, the ancients associated frogs with fertility, harmony, and the goddess Venus (Aphrodite). Strung on a modern leather cord to be wearable!
