Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A handsome Roman gold ring of over 20 karats crowned with a polished garnet intaglio carved with the image of a stately ibex, poised in profile facing left. The ibex stands alert atop a linear ground line, its arched neck, curved horns, and slender limbs rendered in miniature with admirable clarity. The engraved gemstone nestles within a smooth, oval bezel, its rich wine-red hue contrasting beautifully with the high-karat yellow gold of the tapered hoop. The choice of the ibex - a nimble, sure-footed mountain goat - may have carried talismanic associations for strength, resilience, or virility. Garnet itself was a prized gemstone in antiquity, believed to hold protective powers and commonly used in personal adornment, often as a seal ring or a mark of status. Size of intaglio: 0.5" L x 0.3" W (1.3 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 0.9" L x 0.7" W (2.3 cm x 1.8 cm); US ring size: 5.25; gold quality: 84.82% (20.4 karats); weight: 5.4 grams
This ring's refined craftsmanship and precious materials suggest it belonged to an elite Roman patron, perhaps worn as a signet, statement of taste, or a charm against adversity. Rings of this type are known from burials and treasure hoards across the Roman Empire, bearing witness to both the technical skill of Roman jewelers and the intimate personal meanings jewelry could carry.
