Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful ring comprised of a 88% - over 21 karat - gold band and a sizable carnelian cabochon. The crimson-hued stone presents a prominent profile, rising high above the thick ring band, which tapers at the other side. Carnelian stones, which were immensely popular throughout Greco-Roman antiquity, originated from deposits in the Arabian Peninsula and India. Like the Egyptians and the Greeks, the Romans believed that the carnelian stone was endowed with magical powers capable of warding off the evil eye. Size of stone: 0.6" L x 0.5" W x 0.3" H (1.5 cm x 1.3 cm x 0.8 cm); of ring: 1" L (2.5 cm); US ring size: 8; gold quality: 88% (21.12 karats); weight: 4.8 grams
