Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE; Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A charming Roman jasper intaglio of crimson hues that has been incised on top with a left-facing image of the winged god of love Cupid (Greek Eros) riding a mythological aquatic creature known as a hippocamp (also hippokampus). The hippocamp is an amalgam of the front end of a horse (Greek hippos) and the scaly back end of a sea monster (Greek kampos). The intaglio is set within a lovely 59.8% gold ring. Size (intaglio): 0.44" L x 0.52" W (1.1 cm x 1.3 cm); (ring setting): 0.58" L x 0.80" W x 0.90" H (1.5 cm x 2 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 59.8% (equivalent to 14K+); weight: 8.8 grams; US ring size: 6
