Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely cast Roman eagle in leaded bronze, dating to the early Imperial period, its wings dramatically spread and head turned to one side in a gesture of vigilant command. This proud raptor, emblem of Roman legions and Jupiter's divine authority, stands with claws outstretched and feathers crisply detailed in rhythmic, incised strokes across breast, wings, and tail. The sculptor has imbued the piece with lifelike energy: a sense of weight, power, and watchful presence. Throughout the Roman world, the eagle (aquila) was more than a military standard - it was a totem of Rome's destiny, the creature of the highest god, carried into battle and carved into public buildings as a reminder of imperial reach. This example, small enough to grace a household shrine or civic altar, embodies that soaring symbolism. Its deep green patina and fine surface texture offer a timeless echo of empire. Size: 1.3" L x 2.5" W x 2" H (3.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 5.1 cm); 4.4" H (11.2 cm) on included custom stand.
