Description:

ORIGINALLY OFFERED AT $1,750

Ancient Rome, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely carved high relief marble section depicting two naturalistically rendered petite hands cradling a bunch of fruits in what appears to be a section of a sack or animal skin. I so appreciate the artist's appreciation for depicting physiognomy. Just look at how naturalistic those hands are, with finely delineated nailbeds. Despite this penchant for realism, given the existence of the fruit, these hands may belong to a mythological deity, perhaps the infant Bacchus/Dionysos or the young Silvanus, god of forests and woodlands whose name literally means "of the woods" and was a woodland deity and protector of fields and flocks. An impressive piece displaying expert sculptural technique with layers of symbolic value. Custom stand. Size: 6" L x 5.5" W x 5.5" H (15.2 cm x 14 cm x 14 cm); 8" (20.3 cm) H on stand
