Description:

ORIGINALLY OFFERED AT $450

Rome, ca. 1st to 4th centuries CE. This is a carved marble statue fragment of a hand that is about one half adult size, or a child's size. It is grasping a cylindrical object that has broken off. Although this piece is a fragment, it is a complete hand with fingernail details and a lifelike chubbiness that leads me to think it is from a carving of a child. This piece may be from a tomb monument or some other form of portraiture, a form of sculpture at which the Romans exceeded. Size: 4.75" L x 2.4" W x 1.7" H (12.1 cm x 6.1 cm x 4.3 cm).

Provenance: Ex- Private New Jersey collection acquired before 1990
