Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely left hand carved from a beautiful white marble in a realistic pose, grasping three plump pomegranates. Larger than life-size, the hand likely once belonged to a monumental sculpture, perhaps representing Venus (Aphrodite) - the goddess of love - or Juno (Hera) - the goddess of marriage and family - as both were associated with the pomegranate which symbolized both death and fertility in ancient Greece and Rome. The physiognomy of the hand as well as the positioning of the fingers are quite naturalistic, befitting high-quality works of Roman stone carving. Indeed, the technical skill of this sculptor was paramount; just look at the details, those nailbeds, the bone structure beneath the skin, the delineation of knuckles, veins, and even palm lines. The sculptor who created this piece clearly possessed the expertise required to turn stone to flesh! Size: 5.375" L x 10.25" W x 4.625" H (13.7 cm x 26 cm x 11.7 cm)

  • Condition: Missing tips of three fingers as shown. Abrasions/minute nicks to tips of thumb and pinky as well as other high-pointed areas. The hand broke away from the figure's arm across the wrist, hence this area is rough as shown. There is a small circular depression on the outer wrist; this was once the location of a pin used for attachment.
