Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A finely sculpted marble torso from a larger statue of a Roman man, depicted in the traditional civic costume — the toga, wrapped gracefully around the body and over the left shoulder, with the right hand emerging from a richly embroidered fold. The toga, once a visual marker of Roman citizenship and elite status, is rendered here with careful attention to weight, texture, and layered folds, emphasizing the dignity and gravitas of the figure. Size: 14" L x 8" W x 24" H (35.6 cm x 20.3 cm x 61 cm)

Of particular note is the ornamented clavus or hem, intricately decorated with scrolling floral or vegetal motifs in raised relief — a rare feature likely indicating senatorial or priestly rank, or perhaps a symbolic evocation of Roman pietas (public virtue).

The figure’s missing head and lower legs do not detract from the commanding presence conveyed by the torso’s posture and drapery. Statues like this once stood in fora, basilicas, or funerary enclosures, honoring magistrates, patrons, or respected ancestors.
