Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A glass millefiori bowl of stunning aubergine and cream hues that swirl around each other in a whimsical manner. The shallow vessel exhibits a hemispherical form with a thin rim, rounded walls, and a stable base. The mosaic technique resulted in glass that Pliny the elder described as "eyes" due to the repeating two colored motif across the surface. This is an interesting piece that shows off Roman mastery of glass shaping and artistry. Size: 3.25" Diameter x 1.3" H (8.3 cm x 3.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York City, New York, USA; ex-private collection, acquired on the Paris art market in 2008; ex-private French collection
