Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful paste glass intaglio featuring a centaur facing right and holding a spear or sword set in a modern, triple banded gold ring. Originating in Greek mythology, centaurs were hybrid creatures with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a horse. Romans, who were heavily influenced by Greek culture, occasionally depicted centaurs in their art and literature, as seen in this example. Size of intaglio: 0.4" W (1 cm); of ring: 0.75" L x 0.5" W (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm); US ring size: 5.75; gold quality: 69.19% (equivalent to over 14 karats); weight: 2.7 grams
